Internships/mentorship/research

Updated: Nov 3, 2020

This is the page dedicated to compiling internship and mentorship/research opportunities. Some of them will be gender specific while others will be more general. This page will update from time to time, so keep an eye out for the most recent opportunities! This will include both summer internships and normal internships during the year.

Are you a rising senior/current senior? Have you researched in Science or Engineering? Submit your research to this website (has to be independent). You must submit research by November 12, 2020. Good luck!

Great online opportunity during Quarantine:

Pulsar Search Collaboratory- PSC students participate in an online course that teaches them about pulsar science and radio astronomy and prepares them to become competent researchers. The course is led by world renowned astronomers Dr. Maura McLaughlin and Duncan Lorimer. Once trained, PSC students gain access to radio astronomy data taken at the giant Green Bank Telescope.

U.S. Department of Education Launches Space Mission Challenge for High School Students- Building on the Administration-wide commitment to expand student interest in the booming science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, the U.S. Department of Education launched CTE Mission: CubeSat, a national challenge to inspire students to build technical skills for careers in space and beyond. High school students from across the country are invited to design and build CubeSat (cube satellite) prototypes, or satellites that aid in space research, bringing space missions out of the clouds and into the classroom. To learn more, schools can join a virtual information session on September 1, 2020.

John Hopkins Science Internship Page- this is another lenghty list of science internships and it is very thorough, but it contains internships not only from NC but all over the country. Some of them are for HIgh School students, others are not, but you can save it for future reference if you want to get an Internship in college, like this one in NC https://www.niehs.nih.gov/careers/research/summers/

The CURIE Academy is a one-week summer residential program for high school girls who excel in math and science and want to learn more about careers in engineering. Hosted by Cornell University.

Step Up to STEM- A free one week residential summer program for underrepresented minority students. We found this on another great science opportunities for internships, Pathways to Science, but we chose to include this one because it was the only one for NC

Geosciences Bridge program- The Geosciences Bridge Program offers a 6-week paid internship for students planning to pursue careers in the geosciences. The program includes lectures, field trips, hands-on activities, two for-credit college courses, housing, meals, travel to and from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), and a stipend.

Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES)- Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES) is a rigorous six-week residential academic enrichment program for rising high school seniors – many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
