This page is dedicated to compiling volunteer opportunities connected to STEM fields. Most of these will not be gender specific. This page will be updated periodically, so check it from time to time to see if there's something new! MOst of these will be on Let's Serve so you can log your service Hours!

ECHHS WSTEM- volunteer with us for peer tutoring!


UNC research: Commins Laboratory- Support ongoing research activities of the Commins Research Lab. Duties will include washing glassware, running the autoclave, maintaining inventory of research materials, and assisting with experiments. Training will be provided and work will be supervised to ensure student safety. Students will have the opportunity participate in research lab meetings to gain insight into translational research, and to gain exposure to the field of medicine. Students interested in serving should reach out in May to scommins@email.unc.edu. Volunteers will be interviewed to assess interest and availability. Positions will be offered only during June enrollment, selected volunteers will be able to gain hours throughout the year.


Duke Chi Lab- Cancer research lab


The Duke Lemur Center through its living laboratory advances science, scholarship, and biological conservation through interdisciplinary research on lemurs. By engaging scientists, students and the public in new discoveries and global awareness, the Center promotes a deeper appreciation of biodiversity and an understanding of the power of scientific discovery.


Duke University-Lab Assistant- Students will gain invaluable experience in the field of biological research focusing on deepening our understanding of the sense of smell. She/he will conduct PCR, genotyping, cloning, sequencing, cell culture, luciferase assays, tissue sectioning, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, data analysis, computational modeling and/or literature searches. She/he will handle recombinant DNA, HEK293T cell line, and/or odor chemicals.


Morehead Planetarium- To serve North Carolina and beyond by bringing together the unique resources of UNC to engage the public for an improved public understanding of science, technology and health.
